Research Field "Transactional support and Recovery"

Normally, the transactional support for long running processes requires an extended transaction mechanism that allows defining compensation steps in order to enable some kind of logical rollback for already completed and committed activities. One important problem in this context is that the kind of compensation depends on many factors, such as the current state and the point in time a failure occurs. The problem becomes more complex when the structure of the workflow instance is dynamically modified due to dynamic changes. Moreover, for enterprise wide and cross enterprise workflows numerous other problems have to be solved, for example, when an actor is allowed to reset activities controlled by a foreign company. In this context, it must be considered not only technical issues but also consider aspects related to privacy, documentation, laws, etc. Research is needed in order to carefully analyze and understand all these issues.
